MRD Horse Transport was established by Martin Richard Dewar in 1992 after eight years transporting and working with horses in Europe where great experience was gained.
Here is how Martin describes his development;
'I have been in the horse industry all my life. Sometimes it is difficult to know how or where it all started. At my earliest recollection of being involved in the world of horses was at the age of 4 years old, and on a very rainy day my mother arrived home with a Dartmoor pony that was full of lice, had sweet itch and was unbelievably nervous. I was taught to ride properly by a man called Andrew Fielder who at the time was an international show jumper with a famous horse called Vibart.'
'In time not only could I ride but understood the basics of showjumping aswell and it was not long before 'Pepe' and I became a true team – local shows at first then on to the pony showjumping cicuit where we were up against some of todays showjumping household names, and on several occasions beating them. I was asked to join Cheshire Hunt North pony club and was chosen to become team member for the Prince Philip Cup Mounted Games which went on to win at Wembley at the Horse of the Year Show. After this came many other team memberships representing the county at national events at Stoneleigh with successes such as 2nd in country representing the pony club at triathlon, riding another pony Mr Magoo. Other wins followed at Stoneleigh, the Great Manchester Show and Aberdeen Show. At 16 years I then went to work for 2 years at the National Hunt stables of W.A. Stephenson – enough of my younger days.'
'I went on to ride and train horses in Sweden, Germany and lastly Holland. I returned to the UK to set up my own yard specifically re-training horses with 'behavioural problems' giving demonstrations, talks and writing articles for equestrian papers. The transporting business developed through customers wanting me to move their horses as they were unable to load their horses/ponies.'
Martin is the main driver and has held his HGV Class I, II, III Licence for 25 years with a clean licence.
